Meet Tavia

The Drag Explosion was part of the recent New York Virtual Art Book Fair.

A Zoom discussion about my soon-to-be-available book included me, art director and publisher David Knowles (Domain) and Tavia N’yongo, who wrote the afterword.

David brought in Tavia to the project and he and I were meeting each other for the first time. He come with an impressive resumé—he teaches at Yale and writes about performance and art through the lenses of blackness and queerness in both popular and academic venues. He also experienced NYC’s nightlife in the 1990s and his essay provides fantastic insights about the era.

And get this, he’s a sweetheart!

I’m very lucky to collaborate with such talented people!

Face Time

It’s always exciting when The Drag Explosion gets a media mention, but a profile by The Face magazine about my upcoming book is especially thrilling.

The Face, which is from England, dates back to 1980 when London was the cool music capital of the world. During my youth, I lived for each issue and the magazine greatly help expand my mind and artistic sensibility. It really means a lot to me to be included in such an influential publication. The great article is by Ashleigh Kane.

As I was running around snapping photos of NYC’s drag and gay scene in the 1980s and ‘90s, Reynaldo Rivera was doing the same in Los Angeles, with a Latino flavor. (The photos below are all by him. The last one is a self-portrait from 1996.)

Plus, we both have new books, which we talked about at a recent event sponsored by Artforum and Bookforum. I was so flattered—his photos are fantastic! (You can watch video of the event here.)

His book is Reynaldo Rivera: Provisional Notes from a Disappeared City,” published by Semiotext(e).

I spent the last day of my photo exhibit at Tiger Strikes Asteroid gallery, greeting friends and making new ones. The entire show was a wonderful experience and I owe a give big thanks to the gallery, curator Pacifico Silano and all who stopped by!
